Twoonies for Movies

This is not an advert, I just thought this would be fun thing to do next week, but remembered it is March break and I would rather pay more to see a movie without the added teen commentary. Plus, don’t the “o”s look like eggs?

Leisure Institute

Also on the benefit front, a new entity devoted to bringing danceable grooves to the North End, The Institute of Leisure, presents a Cruise Ship Party at the North Street Church on Saturday night at 10 p.m., with part of the proceeds going to the Centre for Art Tapes. The evening will also be a send-off for Windom Earle, as the indie dance rock outfit heads to SXSW in Austin, Texas, and features additional sounds from the Frank Zappa Choir and DJ Serge Plourde. Admission is $6, or $5 if you dress up in your finest Love Boat ensemble.

Yet another way to spend money online

The Windom Earle All-Stars’ “A Series Of Minor Personal Tragedies” is on Zunior for $8.88.

If you’ve not yet heard Windom Earle, this is your chance. More music from the Canada’s martimes that rivals the best indie rock going anywhere in the world.

Ultra Smooth and Sugary Sweet

Windom Earle’s “Kitten Vs Pegasus” has popped up on SXSW 2007. Pop No.1 online mix. It is on the “Your big sister probably get laid with this type of song” side.

Award Winning Songwriting (for kids!)

I don’t want to give myspace too much credit for hipping me to this news, but I did receive a message through that series of tubes that is pretty interesting. An old friend and former collegue Kristin Andreassen posted this:

I just found out that my song “Crayola Doesn’t Make a Color for Your Eyes” won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest!! It got first place in the Children’s Music Category for this half-year.

I now have a 50/50 chance of winning for all of 2006. It’s a competition between “Crayola” and the song that won for the first half of the year, and it’s decided by ON-LINE VOTING.

So I’ll let you know when and how to vote, okay? (What I know is that the voting is for two weeks starting March 15th).

And even if I don’t win for the whole year, I’m still pretty psyched and honored to win because this is a great competition with sweet prizes and lots of great entries.

Love to you all and thanks for the support…
Kristin

The short version is that I worked with Kristin in 1996 for the Centre for Community and Enterprise Networking (run by the NSERC/SSHRC Associate Chair in the Management of Technological Change at the University College of Cape Breton, which is now known as Cape Breton University). I was plucked from the Cape Breton Music Mailing List while I was going to school in PEI to help research and develop a “virtual music centre” for Cape Breton Music that resulted in Cape Breton Music Online. She is originally from Oregon and ended up in Sydney via Montreal and quickly immersed herself in the Island but didn’t begin her career in music until she left Cape Breton to join a dance troop several years later. Now, just imagine if I gave you the long version!

Oh yeah

I didn’t really point it out earlier, but I just started writing for A Quiet Revolution. This is the mission statement:

The name comes from the Quiet Revolution (Révolution tranquille), a period of rapid change in Quebec, Canada in the 1960s.

The changes were the result of many important transformations within Quebec society, just as important changes within the music industry today are heralding a new music revolution based on the internet, the DIY spirit and digital means of distributing music.

While this site will cover significant music news/events that all musicians should be aware of, as well as marketing ideas for bands to consider, a significant portion of time will be dedicated to covering the local music scene.

Music coverage ideally will be:

  • Halifax > Nova Scotia > East Coast > Canada > Indie > Everything else

Rock Gardener Rob MacArthur and I met awhile back and ended up having a lot of the same ideas for a site such as this. Sure, a little baby got between us, but now I am ready to contribute. Feel free to say hi! to me.

Note: I promise this won’t get in the way of any of my poster posting, news noting or cat coverage.
